75 years Groschopp

08.08.2023

Groschopp has every reason to celebrate this year. It all began in 1948 with the founding of EMW Elektro-Motoren-Feinbauwerk Groschopp & Co. GmbH in Mönchengladbach-Rheydt. In 1954, the company moved to its present location in Viersen. It is only since 2000 that the drive manufacturer has been operating under the name Groschopp AG Drives & More. On August 25 of this year, Groschopp celebrates its 75th anniversary at an anniversary party with about 250 guests.

At Groschopp, the focus is on the production of electric motors and gearboxes for various industries. Each year, the company manufactures around 150,000 motors on an area of 10,000 square meters in Germany and 4,500 square meters in China. Since the 2000s, the entire production has been continuously modernized and automated. From product design to machining and winding technology.

Among Groschopp's best-selling products are commutator built-in motors, induction motors and servo motors, as well as worm and helical gear units - important unique selling points of the manufacturer are application-specific adaptations as required, as well as the extreme durability and repairability of the drives. The most important target industries include mechanical and apparatus engineering, medical technology, food and beverages, and the textile and packaging industries. In the field of energy distribution, Groschopp is the market leader with its drives.

Pioneers in servo technology

For years, Groschopp has been involved in various research projects worldwide in order to repeatedly bring new drive concepts to the market at the cutting edge of technology. Especially in servo technology, the company has repeatedly succeeded in developing innovative products, starting with an electrically commutated DC motor with good concentricity characteristics. With a self-developed encoder system, Groschopp was able to offer customers a servo drive that fit into any budget as early as the mid-1990s. The combination of motor and servo drive then conquered the market in no time. Another innovation was the introduction of the toothed coil winding technology, as this allowed the electronically commutated servo motors to achieve a particularly high power density, and high efficiency, as well as high positioning accuracy. This was followed in 2017 by a drive concept specially designed for hygiene-critical areas that integrates motors, planetary gearheads and control technology in a stainless steel housing.

Future visions at Groschopp

Groschopp is currently setting up a second production branch, which involves producing methanol as a storage medium from photovoltaic electricity and converting it back into electricity and heat at a later date with the help of a block heating plant. The aim is to continue to be successful on the market and remain competitive in the future with what the company is doing.
